Pine trees have been an integral part of Maine history from the beginning.
The first settlers harvested the giant old-growth pine trees to use for masts on British ships.
That made way for farming and the ongoing scarring of the forest.
Dating and mapping the trees we see today will tell the long story about how this land was used and abused.
It will take careful documentation of what we find to reveal what the trees can tell us.
We need volunteers to date and tag trees and then import the information into mapping software.
You can volunteer for an hour or a few hours or more.
We also need an increment borer to extract core samples for accurate dating. The method we have been using (measuring the tree circumference) can only estimate age.
